Justice Minister Beatrice Ask at a conference yesterday to discuss organised crime in Gothenburg

Tougher Sentencing for Violent Crimes

The rules surrounding punishing violent offenders should to be tightened, according to an investigation by Prosecutor-General Anders Perklev.

His proposal is to be handed over today to the Swedish Justice Minister, Beatrice Ask.

The degree of punishment for serious assault and blackmail is to change and re-offenders are to receive harsher penalties the second time around.

He also suggests that the prosecutors should give a comprehensive report on the consequences of the crime on trial.

Society’s acceptance of violent crime has become too high, he says, and therefore tougher punishments are needed.
