EU Agree On Climate Pact

Climate change has been another key topic at the EU summit.

There were fears prior to the meeting that a number of Eastern European countries as well as Italy would pull out of EU commitments to reducing carbon dioxide emissions on the grounds of tight budgets in the current financial crisis.

However, all 27 EU member states eventually agreed that the measures could not wait and reached an agreement on the climate package pleasing French EU chairman, Nicolas Sarkozy.

The targets set by EU leaders last year include reducing greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption by 20 per cent each. They also pledged to have 20 per cent of electricity in the EU generated by renewable energy sources by 2020.
