Underfire Swedish Company Promises to Relocate

Published onsdag 22 oktober 2008 kl 14.40

A Swedish lock and security manufacturer, Abbas Abloy, has said it will relocate one of its factories abroad, after scathing criticism from Swedish organisations and negative comment from Foreign Minister Carl Bildt.

Three non-governmental organisations, Diakonia, which is the Swedish Free Churches’ Development body, Swedishwatch and the Swedish Church have published a report criticising Assa Abloy for owning a factory in the illegal Israeli Barkan settlement in occupied Palestinian territory in the West Bank. The organisations say that the Swedish company is undermining international efforts to find a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

On Tuesday night a spokeswoman for Abbas Abloy said that they would investigate whether they were breaking international law by having the factory in the area and if so would relocate their factory.
