Sweden stops adoptions from Vietnam

The government is withdrawing permission to adopt children from Vietnam. A spokesman said on Thursday that the bilateral adoption agreement with Vietnam had to be canceled because of evidence of corruption within the Vietnamese adoption authorities.

According to an American-led investigation Vietnamese officials have been bribed to allow children to be adopted by single persons or applicants past the age considered appropriate for adopting.

A spokesperson for the Swedish Adoption Center said the decision meant that half of the roughly 300 applicants registered there would have to give up their adoption plans because conditions in other countries were not as lenient as in Vietnam.
