Tourists Carry Antibiotic-Resistant Bugs

Tourists who have visited countries such as Thailand, India or Egypt carry antibiotic resistant bacteria with them upon their return.

This is shown by a new Swedish study, the first time that the global spreading of these resistant bacteria has been investigated.

Researchers studied the intestinal flora of 50 travellers who visited common tourist destinations. Almost a third of the tourists were found to carry ESBL - bacteria that can produce an enzyme that is resistant to antibiotics. This is a surprisingly high number, according to doctor Thomas Tängden of Uppsala University Hospital.
