Swede: UN Security Council Fails to Protect Civilians

In the debate page of the Stockholm newspaper Svenska Dagbladet, a former top-level United Nations legal administrator, Sweden’s Hans Corell has publicly blasted the permanent members of the UN Security Council for blocking decisions because of their own interests.

He points to the United States stopping a call for a cease fire in Gaza and Beijing’s blocking UN efforts to end the violence in Darfur.

The Swede concludes that the United Nations fails to live up to its obligations to safe guard civilians in conflict situations.
