Palme Prize to Congo Hospital Founder

The 2008 Olof Palme Prize has been awarded to Dr. Denis Mukwege, founder of the Panzi Hospital in the eastern Congo.

According to the Olof Palme Memorial Fund, Denis Mukwege’s work provides an outstanding example of what courage, persistency and enduring hope may accomplish for human rights and dignity.

A gynaecologist, he works to help women who have been gang-raped by local militias.

The award, which is worth 75,000 dollars, will be presented here in Stockholm on January 30th.
