Runaways Frequently Avoid Sentence

A growing number of criminals in Sweden have their prison sentences written off as they manage to keep hidden until the period for prosecution has expired.

Over 140 prison sentences have been avoided this way in the last couple of years, according to the Swedish News Bureau TT. In Sweden, the period of prosecution varies between 1 and 30 years depending on how severe the crime was.

If the convict does start serving but run away, the statute of limitations is calculated from what is left of the sentence. The government is looking in to changing the rules and may propose a bill on removing the statute of limitations altogether for more serious crimes next year, according to Swedish Newspaper Sydsvenskan.
