Swedes Economize on Party Tipple

As the credit crunch takes an ever tighter hold, Swedes are finding ways to save wherever they can, even when it comes to bubbly.

Champagne sales in Sweden were down in December, but sales of cheaper sparkling wine were up, according to new sales figures from the Swedish retail alcohol monopoly, Systembolaget.

According to Swedish news agency TT, the figures suggest that those that may usually have splashed out on a bottle of Champagne decided to make do with less exclusive wines to celebrate the holiday period. How the credit crunch affected hangover cures on New Years Day is not yet known.
