New Efforts for those with Rare Diseases

Swedish social welfare authorities are planning a study on how to improve care for those diagnosed with unusual diseases.

The experts maintain that despite the general high quality of medical care, these patients have an uphill battle getting the correct diagnosis and then proper treatment because the small number of cases and doctors unfamiliar with the symptoms.

Another problem is the relative high cost of research - and the difficulties in convincing drug companies to invest even in areas where there are so few cases.
