Possible to ’Buy a Professorship’

The system of sponsored professorships makes it possible, in practice, to buy your way into the title.  That’s according to a study by broadsheet Svenska Dagbladet.

Around 650 of Sweden’s 4,900 professors hold so-called adjungerade or temporary part time professorships, with their wages paid by an outside body.

There is no central register for these temporary professorships, and each college can make its own arrangements.

This system took off in the 1990s and now could be causing harm to universities’ independence, as academic institutions hope to get a free teacher while companies hope for commercial benefits.
