Controversies Over Swedish Forces

As part of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, around 350 Swedish soldiers are based in the northern town of Mazar i Sharif, and the government plans an increase to 500.

The question of troops in Afghanistan has been a contentious one in Sweden, with a tension between on the one hand Sweden’s history of neutrality, but on the other hand, its tradition of participation in peacekeeping mission.

In October 2007 we met Swedish soldiers training to go to Afghanistan, and recorded video of one of their exercises:
