Heating the livingroom by means of an open fireplace may be cozy and romantic, but it also increases the risk of getting cancer. That is the result of environmental research by a team of scientists at Gothenburg’s Sahlgrenska University Hospital. Studies showed that firewood emits five times the amount of cancer-causing PAH as other means of heating. PAH stands for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon. In neighboring Denmark environmentalists have long been warning against the use of open fireplaces, claiming that the health risk equals that of passive smoking.
