Reinfeldt Discussed Östberg Case

Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt says he brought up the the case of Swedish-American prisoner Annika Östberg with Californian governor Arnold Schwarzenegger when they met two years ago. Östberg was transferred to a Swedish prison today after spending almost 30 years in a jail in the States. Reinfeldt said he had the off the record conversation with Schwarzenegger to tell the governor that Sweden was willing to recieve the prisoner so she could spend the rest of her sentence here.

Reinfeldt had told the media at the time that he wouldn’t be discussing the issue, which he now says was a way to keep the sensitive negotiations under wraps. Reinfeldt and other Swedish ministers have also praised the way Swedish diplomats have handled the case in the US.

Annika Östberg is one of Sweden’s most well known prisoners having spent half her life in jail in America, serving a sentence between 25 years and life for her part in two murders, including that of a policeman, carried out in California in the early eighties.
