The Swedish Ipred law means that copyright organizations can go to court in order to have suspected file sharers personal details released to them. To circumvent this, there are already several anonymization services available on the internet and Pirate Bay’s service will be very much like these. With one exception – they will not log any personal details of users. This way, there are no details to release- even if they are ordered to do so by the court.
The new service means that the user surfs the net through a so called vpn-tunnel. The user’s own IP-address will then be withheld and those that are on the lookout for file sharers can only see the IP-address belonging to the service provider.
Traffic over the Pirate Bay has decreased since the Ipred law came in to effect – but only by a few percentage points, Peter Sunde, spokesman for the Pirate Bay, told TT. He also said that the new service might already be launched and fully functioning on Wednesday. (rm)
