Unemployment

Minister: "Easier To Sack In Sweden"

Sweden’s employment laws are the reason why unemployment is rising faster here than in many other European Union member states, according to Employment Minister Sven-Otto Littorin.

Speaking to Swedish Radio news, he claims that it is much easier to fire people in Sweden compared to countries such as Spain and France, and that’s why unemployment is rising fast in the current economic downturn.

Youth unemployment in Sweden is rising twice as fast as the EU average according to current figures, but Littorin says that despite what some commentators say, Sweden has quite liberal employment legislation, meaning a more flexible labour market, which he says is good in the long run for the Swedish economy, allowing it to adapt more quickly to ups and downs in the economic situation.
