The European Commission in Brussels issued a statement on Sunday, saying that no cases of the animal disease have been reported in Europe so far. A spokeswoman said that the commission was in permanent contact with authorities in Mexico and in the United States as well as with the World Health Organization, WHO. ‘We are following the situation closely as it evolves,’ she said.
Meanwhile, the WHO has suggested that the fatalities reported in Mexico may not have been caused by swine flu itself but by complications of pneumonia patients who had additionally been infected with the virus. (KH)
