Delay in Burying Nuclear Waste?

With an international conference taking place here in Stockholm on the storage of radioactive waste, environmental groups in Sweden are calling for a delay in the decision where and how to store the waste here in this Nordic nation - because of the many unknown factors involved.

A decision on placing the waste in copper capsules imbedded in bentonite clay and buried 500 meters in bed rock in of two suggested sites is expected in the near future.

The environmentalists maintain that both the nuclear power industry and the politicians are rushing too quickly into a decision - and that it is still not known how stable the copper and the clay will be over the years.
