Olofsson Defends Nuclear Policy

The leader of the Swedish Centre Party has defended herself in a speech at the party conference following strong criticism from a high profile party member in a newspaper.

Writing in the ”Dagens Nyheter” Thursday, former Labour Market Minister Börje Hörnlund said that Olofsson’s decision to reverse long-held policy on nuclear energy was a scandal and the most undemocratic move in the party’s 99 year history.

Opposition to nuclear energy has been a keystone of the Centre Party, but Olofsson, who is Minister for Enterprise and Deputy Prime Minister in the government coalition,  recently opened the door to the building of a new wave of nuclear reactors.

Olofsson defended herself on Thursday saying that the climate and energy policy was the most ambitious in the whole world and the Centre party had driven it forward.
