Critical Voices at Center Conference

A the ongoing conference of Sweden’s Center Party, some delegates have criticised party leader Maud Olofsson’s decision to reverse the party’s longheld policies on nuclear power.

Several speakers expressed their disappointment over Olfosson’s actions.

After Olofsson explained her position to the conference, one delegate told the TT news agency that she doesn’t know what to say to Center voters and that she herself doesn’t intend to vote for the party. Another delegate criticised the party leadership for not waiting for the conference before changing such a key policy, while a third called the move a kick in the stomach.

Olofsson, who is both Minister for Enterprise and Deputy Prime Minister in the center-right government, recently opened the door to building new nuclear power stations in Sweden. The Center has been strongly opposed to nuclear power for decades. (gw)
