High Turnout at EU Election Advance Vote Start

The opening of Sweden’s polling stations for the EU elections saw a high turnout of advance voters on Wednesday. A spokesman for the election board said that in Gothenburg’s largest polling station more than three times as many voters had cast their ballot as in the advance vote opening for the Swedish parliament election of 2006.

The spokesman said that the overall turnout for the EU election was expected to exceed the figures of 2004, when voter participation had reached 37.9 percent. That had been the lowest turnout within the European Union. (KH)
