Mental Problems for Samis Unsolved

At seminars for reindeer-raising samis in the northern Swedish town of Kiruna, Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish participants are highly critical of what they call the lack of government-sponsored measures to deal with the psychological problems of the samis.

Statistics show a much higher suicide rate among young male reindeer-raisers compared to the local non-sami populations in northern Lappland - explained by the growing uncertainty for the samis because of legal conflicts with the local population over grazing and hunting rights and the loss of many reindeer to predators.
