Swede Returns Acropolis Fragment

The BBC reports that a retired Swedish teacher has returned to Greece a piece of a marble statue from the Acropolis.

The news was announced during the inauguration of the new Acropolis Museum in Athens, and may strengthen the campaign for the return of the Elgin marbles from the British Museum.

Former gym teacher Birgit Wiger-Angner’s family is said to have had the fragment from a freeze in the Erechtheion temple, one of the ancient buildings on the Acropolis temple hill in Athens, in its possession for 110 years.

In the Acropolis Museum for its inauguration, she called on the British Museum to return the marble statues removed by Lord Elgin in the early years of the 19th century.
