Anti-pirate operations off Africa are to continue into next year. Right now two corvettes, Stockholm and Malmö, plus a support vessel, are taking part in the international work against pirates in the Guld of Aden, but their assignment ends in mid-September.
Now the government is to send HMS Carlskrona and 145 personnel out for four months in the first half of 2010. The operation is estimated to cost almost 28 million US dollars.
Swedish defence minister Sten Tolgfors says that, since Sweden has the presidency of the EU, it must live up to expectations that it will take responsibility for EU operations. He also says that Sweden can easily afford it, as the government has doubled the budged for peacekeeping operations.
