The European Union says it is deeply concerned over continued abuses of human rights in Eritrea.
In a statement, the Swedish EU presidency says that the Eritrean authorities have arrested a number of political figures and journalists in recent years, keeping them detained without charge. It expresses concern over continued violations of human rights obligations under domestic and international law.
One of those held is journalist Dawit Issak, who holds both Swedish and Eritrean citizenship. His imprisonment without trial since 2001 has led to many protests here in Sweden.
