Swedish Test: Rectal Thermometers Best

Swedish medical studies show that taking temperatures with thermometers in a patient's mouth or ear to measure fevers is not accurate enough - and that the best method is using a rectal thermometer.

The studies show that the readings can differ as much as one degree centigrade - giving the wrong information about the kind of medication to be used.

Hair and wax in the ear and a patient's inability to keep his mouth tightly shut for a whole minute can offset an accurate reading.

323 patients were studied at the central Swedish University of Örebro.
