EU Recommends Smaller Cod Catches

The European Commission has recommended that cod catches be cut by 25% in the Kattegatt area of the North Sea, west of Sweden, despite experts from the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea recommending a total ban on cod fishing in the region.

Swedish Radio news reports that the Council claims that fish stocks are not growing as quickly as hoped. The EU claims that 35 of 37 seas in Europe are over-fished.

EU fishery ministers will decide on how much cod can be fished in the seas around the Swedish coast in December.
