More Swedish Kids To Study Chinese

Published lördag 17 oktober 2009 kl 10.28

Chinese should be studied by students in Sweden's upper high schools, according to Education Minister and Liberal Party leader Jan Björklund.

Speaking to Swedish Radio News, he says he wants to put Mandarin on the same level as German, French and Spanish, meaning it should be offered as an option to students at the age of 16. He says that more children learning the language will give Sweden an advantage internationally.

Björklund also wants Sweden's children to study English at school from the age of 6, as part of an extended school day for the youngest children, which will mean more education and less play.

The plans will form part of the Liberal Party's manifesto for the next General Election in 2010.
