Social Democrats: Keep Our Soldiers in Afghanistan

Social Democrats leader Mona Sahlin

The Opposition Social Democrats have agreed to keep the Swedish troops in Afghanistan after what proved to be an emotional vote at the annual party conference.

There were many strong voices who were calling for the troops' withdrawal from the area, but when the vote was carried out just before midnight on Thursday, those in favour of the troops remaining came out the victors. This despite recent figures showing that the public support for a continued Swedish military presence in Afghanistan is falling.

It was also decided that the Social Democrats will recognise Western Sahara and work towards Sweden and EU doing the same.
