UNESCO Objects to High Coast Stairs

Part of the High Coast

The United Nations agency responsible for culture, UNESCO, has reacted to plans to cut a stairway into the cliffs of the High Coast region in northern Sweden.

The local authorities have given permission for the project as a work of art. But former Swedish environment minister Görel Thurdin, now chair of Sweden’s UNESCO council, says the international organization is questioning the plans.

The High Coast is on UNESCO’s World Heritage List and is part of a nature reserve.
