Continued Rise of Swine Flu in Sweden

The number of confirmed cases of Swine Flu doubled in Sweden during the last week.

647 confirmed cases were reported, according to statistics from the Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease. The increase is visible throughout the country, although some areas have been hit harder than others.

During the past week 51 patients have required hospital treatment, of which three on respirators and one on an artificial lung machine. Four of those in hospital were children under the age of 15. Two patients diagnosed with the Swine Flu died this week.

The peak is not believed to have been reached yet and the increase is expected to continue.

“We are heading straight into the epidemic. We have still reached only a short way in, “said chief epidemiologist Annika Linde at the Institute to Swedish news agency TT.

However, more than 2 million Swedes have so far received the vaccine in less than 5 weeks and there are no signs that the virus has changed character or become more virulent.
