A highly placed local politician in the Stockholm area resigned late on Tuesday after being caught and fined for buying sex from an under aged girl.

Åke Blomqvist, who served on the local council in Huddinge tried to cling on to his job but after being called to a meeting on Tuesday afternoon following pressure from the local authority and his political party, the Liberal party, he resigned from all his political posts.

Earlier, the 67 year old told Swedish newspaper Metro that he had found an Internet site which advertised sexual meetings and group sex activities and had thought it might be “interesting to give it a go”.

“I got into contact with a man who came to my house with a girl (who was 17 at the time)  in the middle of the day. I paid for her but never realised she was under age”, the man said to Metro.

According to the politician he changed his mind and didn’t sleep with the girl after all. But the Police say that the girl stated that sexual intercourse did occur. He was convicted and oreder to pay a fine of 290 US dollars.

Under Swedish law, the buyer of sex is prosecuted not the seller.
