Uighur Accused of Spying on Countrymen
A Stockholm district attorney has brought spy charges against a Swedish citizen of Uighur origin. The man is accused of spying on Uighur refugees in Sweden and delivering material to Chinese authorities. By Swedish law this constitutes illegal intelligence activity which is punishable by up to four years in prison.
The Uighur are a Muslim minority in northwestern China. This summer there were clashes between Uigur demonstrators and Chinese security forces. An undisclosed number of people were killed.
