More People Receive Welfare Benefits

An increasing number of Swedes receives social welfare benefits. According to figures by the National Board of Health and Welfare, municipalities and counties saw a rise in their benefit payments of 23 percent compared with the third quarter last year.

92 percent of all Swedish municipalities registered higher welfare costs – amounting to a total of $US 370 million.

Mary Nilsson, head of the family care department at the National Board of Health and Welfare, told news agency TT that the rise of welfare benefit payments is mostly due to the economic downturn and an increasing unemployment in Sweden.
