Sweden Condemns Closure of Kurdish Party

The Swedish EU presidency has condemned the decision of Turkey’s constitutional court to close the Kurdish party DTP. In a statement Sweden expressed its concerns on behalf of the 27 member bloc over the Turkish decision.

“While strongly denouncing violence and terrorism, the Presidency recalls that the dissolution of political parties is an exceptional measure that should be used with utmost restraint”, the statement said. Turkey as a negotiating country should make the necessary constitutional amendments to bring its legislation on political parties in line with European standard.

Turkey's top court earlier closed the main pro-Kurdish party for having links to PKK Kurdish rebels, a ruling that could undermine efforts to end a long-running conflict with the separatists.
