Björklund: We Need Licensed Teachers

Education Minister Jan Björklund says that Swedish school teachers must be licensed. Presenting a revised proposal for a new school law, Björklund told journalists in Stockholm: ‘Nobody wants to be operated on by a non-licensed doctor, and our school children should not be educated by unauthorized teachers.’

Björklund said that in case of shortages non-licensed teachers could be employed temporarily, but not to the extent that the present school law allowed. It was passed in 1985 by the Social Democratic government and is now to be replaced by the bill that the center-right coalition has agreed on.
