SMSing at the Wheel Highly Risky

The Swedish Motor Vehicle Department is annoyed with drivers who are reading and even writing SMS messages while at the wheel. Road safety director Claes Tingvall told the TT news agency that this is rated as the most dangerous activity of a driver.

‘You would have to be pretty drunk to equal the risks you’re taking by SMSing while driving,’ Tingvall said.

A fresh survey ordered by the department shows that one out of three drivers admits to reading or writing cell phone messages behind the wheel. Two thirds within this group are younger men up to their thirties. According to Swedish traffic laws, SMSing while at the wheel constitutes reckless driving which can lead to suspension of the driver’s license.
