Keeping Down the Price of Prescriptions

After last week’s revelations that pharmaceutical companies are manipulating the purchasing system for Swedish pharmacies to massively increase the prices of medicines, the authorities here say they are changing the system.

Last week the newspaper “Dagens Nyheter” reported that drug companies take advantage of the monthly competitive bidding for generic medicines by bidding low one month and then hiking the price by several hundred percent the next.

Now, writing in the same newspaper, the head of the Dental and Pharmaceutical Benefits Agency says they want to put a ceiling on generic drug prices, at 30 percent of the price of the original medicine before the patent ran out. And they want to change the monthly bidding system to quarterly, making it more difficult for the pharmaceutical companies to manipulate.
