SMS Donations for Haiti Victims Flood In

In just two days, the Swedish public has donated over 1,2 million US dollars to various relief organisations to helping earthquake victims in Haiti. The 350,000 US dollars donated to the Red Cross is a record high, according to the organisations general secretary, Christer Zettergren.

The donations to the Red Cross mainly come via mobile phone text messages and the organisation's homepage, and shows the power of modern technology.

Meanwhile, the Swedish government has been asked to send a team of twelve people who will build a base camp to replace the U.N.'s destroyed headquarters in Haiti. The team and consists of among others engineers and water and sewage experts. They are expected to leave for Haiti on Saturday morning together with the equipment to set up the camp.
