Sharapova Beats Arvidsson in Open

Playing in her first finals in years, Sweden’s Sofia Arvidsson couldn’t hold out against Maria Sharapova of Russia, who beat the Swede 2-0 in the Memphis Open. Just four years before, Arvidsson took her first and only Women’s Tennis Association title in the very same tournament.

But Arvidsson couldn’t repeat that victory against high-ranking Sharapova, who beat the Swede 6-2, 6-1, giving her the 21st title of her career.

Despite the loss, however, Arvidsson will jump up in the world rankings from her current spot of 102, where she had landed after two years of injuries.
