Juvenile Records Clean After Five Years

Starting September 1, crimes committed by juveniles will disappear from their criminal records after just five years instead the current ten. The government hopes that the change will result in fewer relapsed criminals.

“Ten years is a terribly long time. If you stay in the criminal record that long then the risk is great that you can’t get that education, do those trips, or get that driver’s license that you need for getting a good start in life,” Justice Minister Beatrice Ask told P3 Radio News.

The change in law will be retroactive, meaning that it will also apply to those under 18 who were convicted of a crime before September 1.
