1,400 USD for Illegally Confiscated Hemp

A hemp farmer in western Sweden had his hemp seized by the police several times. That turned out to be illegal according to EU law, since he was growing industrial hemp.

After ten years of battling for his case in the Swedish and European courts, the man is now granted 1,400 US dollars in compensation for the seven tons of hemp that had been confiscated and destroyed by the police. The man had wanted four times as much.

Along the way, the Swedish authorities and court had acted in accordance with Swedish narcotics law, and the man was suspected of serious drug crimes.

But according to the European Union court of Justice, a ban on industrial hemp is not consistent with EU law, so that's what the court told the Swedish court which asked for an opinion in 2003. Since then, the man has been trying to get compensation, which he won this week.
