Embassy Hires Private Guards

The Environment Party has criticized plans of the foreign ministry to hire private security personnel to protect the Swedish embassy in Afghanistan. The party’s representative in Parliament said it was discomforting to see that non-military security organizations were finding a growing market in conflict areas like Afghanistan. He said it would be better to let Swedish soldiers or police guard the embassy.

A ministry spokesman confirmed that former elite soldiers recruited as body guards will be employed by the Kabul embassy. He declined to go into detail, saying that information about the assignment and the equipment of the security personnel had to be kept confidential.
