Ships' Ice Problems Cause Dispute

Sweden’s Maritime Administration is blaming the present problems with ships stuck in pack ice on the skippers. A spokesman said that captains of several cruise ships had decided to continue their passages despite warnings by the authorities. They were therefore responsible for their vessels getting blocked.

The Viking shipping line, operator of a number of large ferry boats in the Baltic, denies this. A spokesman said such warnings never reached the Viking ships en route between Sweden and Finland.

Late Friday there were still about 20 passenger boats and freighters immobilized in the northern parts of the Baltic by shifting ice. According to the latest weather prognosis the situation will ease somewhat over the weekend.
