Billions in Benefits Paid Out by Mistake

Försäkringskassan, the Swedish Social Insurance Agency which said recently that it claimed back a record amount of money from benefit cheats last year, is now counting the cost of paying out billions of dollars too much in benefits in 2009.

Figures obtained by the newsapaper Dagens Nyheter show that the Agency paid out 16.4 billion kronor (2.29 billion US Dollars) too much in various benefits last year.

The newspaper reports that the majority of the overspend is down to mistakes from people applying for benefits but deliberate cheating is also a factor.
