Motorcycle Gang Vests OKed for Bars

It is illegal to prohibit people from wearing vests marked by motorcycle gang symbols in bars because it infringes upon freedom of speech, an administrative court in the region of Södermanland has decided.

Swedish Radio News reports that a local government official had added an amendment to the city of Eskilstuna’s alcohol code encouraging bar owners to deny admittance to people wearing “clothes that show a belonging to a gang or a group that can be understood as criminal.”

A private citizen appealed the decision to the administrative court, which in turn evoked Sweden’s extensive law on freedom of expression to strike the code down.

The cities of Gothenburg, Norrköping, and Luleå had all supported the idea, and had hoped to adopt similar measures. It is still unclear if they will abandon these plans.
