New Nuclear Power Plants Proposed

The members of the Swedish parliament will get a first chance to take a stand on the government’s nuclear energy proposal, as Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt’s cabinet officially handed over the reform plan on Tuesday. Reinfeldt and his three coalition partners propose the building of new nuclear power plants when the currently existing ten plants turn too old.

That proposal is in sharp contrast to a referendum held exactly 30 years ago, when Swedes voted for the abandoning of nuclear energy in their country. It is still uncertain whether the government will be able to push through its law proposal as at least three of its MPs have announced they would vote against it later this spring.
