Happy Waffle Day from Radio Sweden!

Happy Waffle Day

March 25th is Waffle Day in this country, when Swedes traditionally eat the patterned cakes. But the entire celebration is based on a mistranslation.

Waffle Day in Swedish is “våffeldagen”, which sounds very much like “Vårfrudagen”, the Swedish name for the Feast of the Annunciation, which is March 25th.

Waffles are usually eaten with jam and cream here, but there are exotic alternatives, featuring such toppings as shrimp, horse radish, or caviar.
