Call for New Scooter Helmet Law?

Drivers of snow-scooters and four-wheelers may soon have to wear helmets, according to the Swedish Transport Agency.

Jenny Rosén from the agency, who has been looking at accident rates on the vehicles, says introducing helmets could bring down death rates.

Just last weekend a 12-year old died in a crash on a four-wheeler, according to news agency TT. Rosén says they may suggest a law change this autumn.

However government minister Åsa Torstensson is sceptical, saying any new law on helmets would have to be enforced properly, and wants the Transport Agency to look at whether it would be practical.

Lars-Gunnar Lundvall, from the Swedish Snow Scooter Owner's association told TT that 60 - 70% of Swedish skidoo drivers currently wear helmets anyway, more than in Finland, which has a law on helmet use.

Rolf Atterling, from the Swedish All Terrain Vehicle Association, told TT he is in favour of a new law: "Absolutely, of course you should wear a helmet when driving this kind of vehicle", he says.
