Öresund Bridge: No Economic Benefit

The Öresund Bridge linking Copenhagen and Malmö has not led to an economic upswing in the region, a new study by SEB reveals.

Newspaper Sydsvenskan writes that the bridge has increased commuting between the two countries and made the region more dynamic, but has not resulted in any significant economic growth over the ten years it has spanned the thin strait between Denmark and Sweden.

The exact reason for the bridge's lack of economic benefit is difficult to pinpoint, but the researchers suggested that Copenhagen's flailing growth may be a part of the explanation.

"Copenhagen is growing slowly and that brings down the whole region," economist and study author Evald Nalin said at a press conference. "Compared with Stockholm, [the Öresund region] is far behind."
